Thermochromic Pigments

· Thermochromic pigments are temperature-responsive materials that change color with temperature variations, often in the form of microcapsules within a powder structure, applicable beyond non-aqueous ink systems.

· Applications

Fashion/Industry: Apparel, footwear, electronic/tube temperature monitoring.

Temperature Indicators: Thermometers, food/ pharmaceutical labels, baby spoons.

Security: Anti-tamper packaging, secure documents.

Novelties: Mood rings, color-changing mugs, toys.

· Working Principles

Liquid Crystal Structure: Some rely on liquid crystal phase transitions. Temperature changes alter molecular arrangement, modifying reflected light wavelength to cause color shifts, useful in precise temperature indicators.Chemical Reaction: Others use reversible reactions in microcapsules with color-formers and leuco-dyes. Temperature fluctuations trigger structural changes in these substances, leading to color changes.

· Types

By Mechanism: Liquid crystal (for precise indication) and chemical reaction-based (encapsulated for stability).

By Reversibility: Reversible (change and revert, e.g., mugs, textiles) and irreversible (permanent change, e.g., safety labels).

By Color Change: Color-to-colorless, colorless-to-color, and color-to-color (e.g., fashion fabrics).

· Technical Specifications

Solids Content: 98% ± 2% for effectiveness.

Particle Size: <6 microns (97%) for uniform dispersion.

Light Fastness: 1-2 (blue wool scale), sensitive to UV.

Shelf Life: 12 months (store <25°C, avoid freezing/UV/heat).
